History

The Elmhurst neighborhood was named after William Grosvenor's estate that was built off Smith Street. Starting in the early 1970s, the Gothic Revival villa was used as the Elmhurst Academy of the Sacred Heart. The school moved to Portsmouth in 1961 and Providence College bought the property. After a fire in 1967, developers purchased the land and Elmhurst Arboretum condominium complex opened on the site in the early 1980s.
