History

The complete Narragansett Electric Company Power Station, now South Street Landing, was built in stages between 1912 and 1952. Originally built to power street cars, it is an excellent example of early 20th-century coal powered power plant design, It was decommissioned in 1995. An effort to convert it into "Dynamo House", was to include the Heritage Harbor Museum. This project failed in the mid-2000's due to financial problems. Started in 2013, CV Properties converted it into South Street Station, opening South Street in October 2017. It is now home to 13 of Brown University's administrative departments as well as the Rhode Island Nursing Education Center (a joint venture between Rhode Island College and the University of Rhode Island).
