History

The block bounded by Young Orchard Ave, Hope, Benevolent, and Cooke Streets was acquired by Gov. William and Amasa Sprague, who erected adjacent houses before 1850 at 1 and 7 Young Orchard Avenue, respectively. Both houses have been razed, the former replaced by a residence built circa 1900 by I. Gifford Ladd, in 1948 it was Bryant College. The Amasa Sprague house was for many years the residence of Gov. Charles Warren Lippitt. The barn has been altered into a house in possession in 1948 of Gordon Lippitt.
