History

A professional paid fire department was formed in the city of Providence in 1854, although the history of organized fire fighting dates well into the eighteenth century. In this neighborhood, an engine house existed as early as 1834 on the corner of Pond and Summer Streets. This house at about 48 Pond Street was build in 1875. The postcard from sometime shortly after 1895 reports: "Hose-Wagon built in 1895. Drawn by two horses, fitted with rubber tires, carries 800 ft. of 2 1/2-inc. Hose, and weighs, ready for service, 3,600 lbs. Placed in service June 18,1895. Company consists of 1 Capt., 1 Lieut., 6 Hosemen, and 1 Driver."
