History

This brick building was designed by Hoppin, Read & Hoppin. Its first story features an arcade of five arches surrounded by decorative carving. The entrance is flanked by tall, wrought iron light fixtures. The building was the first erected by RISD and originally housed RISD's activities, studios, classrooms, offices, and museum space. It is now holds the Edna W. Lawrence Nature Lab, studios, offices, and a gallery.
