History

In 1892, Gustave T. Malmstead, Herbert Perry, Oscar Swanson, and Fayette Amiden started the nation's first supermarket. The Providence Public Market Company advertised that they were the only market in the city offering a wide variety of fresh food. Their 1911 slogan was "Pioneers in Modern Marketing." The business was in the Barstow Building. The business closed in 1954.
