History

Constructed as one of the city's first public schools, this brick building has also housed a preparatory school run by the College of Rhode Island (today's Brown University), a school for African-Americans, a sewing school, a cooking school, the first school in the country for children with pre-tuberculosis symptoms, and a school for children with disabilities. The Providence Preservation Society (PPS) leased the building from the City of Providence from 1960 until purchased it in 2013. In its long history, the building has been altered multiple times, including many restoration efforts by the Providence Preservation Society.
