History

Designed by Enid Yandell, this fountain in Burnside Park was a gift to the city from Paul Bajnotti. It memorialized his wife, Carrie Mathilde Brown Bajnotti, who had died in 1896. The memorial was commissioned in 1898, and Yandell was the sole woman competing for the project. The central sculpture, called "The Struggle of Life," is bronze and was cast by Gorham Manufacturing Company. The engraving reads "Erected AD MDCCCC a gift to honor the memory of Carrie Mathilde daughter of the late Nicholas Brown of Providence from her husband Paul Bajnotti of Turin, Italy." The fountain was renovated in 2002.
