History

The house sits on what was once a large estate that served as a campsite for General Rochambeau's troops during Revolutionary War. Starting in the late 19th century, pieces of the farm were sold off until 1956, when the house ended up on just the very small lot is it on today. The Dexter family owned the house for seven generations until giving it to Preserve Rhode Island in 1977. It had been added to the National Register of Historic Places the year before. Preserve RI uses house as its office and has restored a number of the house's elements. It is one of the few extant colonial farmhouses in Providence.
