History

This inn was established at the intersection of Plainfield and Cranston roads by Obadiah Brown in 1739. Joseph Hoyle purchased it in 1783, and it became the most popular tavern in the area. It continued to be called Hoyle Tavern even under later ownership. The tavern closed in 1886 and the building was demolished 1890. The intersection was long known as Hoyle Square and then Canonicus Square.
