History

This Greek Revival library was designed by William Strickland. The mezzanine level was added inside the double-height main space in 1867. As space got tighter, Norman Isham designed an addition to the southeast corner of the building in 1941. The next expansion, by Warren Platner, extended the 1941 addition toward Benefit Street. The children's area and special collections are housed in these two newer sections of the building.
