History

This Gothic Revival building was designed by John Holden Green. The cornerstone was laid on June 5, 1810, and the church was consecrated on June 11, 1811. When the church was designated the seat of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island in 1929, it was renamed The Cathedral of St. John. The church closed in 2012 due to a dwindling congregation and financial resources, as well as the deteriorating state of the building. After renovation and restoration work, the church became home to the Center for Reconciliation in 2014. Additionally, the building retains its status as the seat of the state's Episcopal Diocese.
