History

This building was designed by Niles Bierregaard Schubarth. Cost of construction was $40,000. The church originally had a brick spire, which was later determined to be unstable and was taken down around 1900. An tower replaced it. In 1912, the congregation merged with the Park Street Free Baptist Church and the church building was purchased by an Armenian congregation. The building was reconsecrated under the name St. Sahag and St. Mesrob Armenian Apostolic Church in 1913. The building was renovated and expanded many times over the following decades. When Interstate 95 was built in the 1960s, Jefferson Street became a challenging place to run operate from. To bring more attention to the church, a large blue cross was added to the outside of the building and has become a landmark. In May 1991, an Armenian style cupola for the top of the steeple. Facilities have been renovated and expanded since.
